Arquitectura como imagem, obra como representação: sujectividade das imagens arquitectónicas

Abstract

Arquitectura Como Imagem, Obra Como Representação é uma reflexão acerca das imagens arquitectónicas, da sua concepção e produção, do seu significado e aceitação. Procurando um entendimento abrangente da disciplina da arquitectura, no âmbito de uma produção cultural, este trabalho debruça-se sobre a importância da imagem arquitectónica para além da mera representação técnica. Neste sentido, são exploradas as potencialidades de um pensamento arquitectónico a partir das suas imagens assumidas como lugar em si, isto é, como meio e fim, radicalizando uma postura que se distancia da quase inquestionável necessidade de materializar a arquitectura. No âmbito deste trabalho, a obra arquitectónica edificada é associada à ideia de um lapso temporal ou representação intercalar de um processo imagético terminado antes. Mas também o depois da obra edificada é marcado por toda uma produção visual mediatizada que reiterará o regresso ao plano do papel, ao plano das ideias. A partir de vários casos e instrumentos de representação arquitectónica (maquetas, fotografias, modelos digitais), procura-se um sentido das imagens que reafirme o seu poder de substituição, mediatização, consagração ou estetização da arquitectura. Defender-se-á que as imagens arquitectónicas, hoje, tecnicamente descodificadas, estimulam uma acessibilidade ímpar a um público vasto reiterando uma interactividade muito provavelmente herdada de uma cultura digital. Resumindo, Arquitectura Como Imagem, Obra Como Representação: subjectividade das imagens arquitectónicas é um ensaio optimista sobre as imagens, as possibilidades que nos oferecem e a sua responsabilidade na construção da presciência e da memória da arquitectura, assim como da produção cultural.

Architecture as Image, Built Work as Representation is a research of architectural images, their conception and production, their signification and reception. Considering the architecture discipline holistically, and recognising its specific role within contemporary culture, this thesis concentrates on the significance of the architectural image as a means of communication beyond mere technical representation and questions whether critical approaches to the image taken outside the field of architecture should be assimilated by the profession. In this way we propose to explore an architectural thinking with the production of images as the main goal rather than as a tool to facilitate built work. Consequently, we radically oppose the necessity to materialize or build architecture. Within this theoretical framework, the term “built work” is associated with a frozen moment in a continuous cycle of image production. In the digital age we no longer make the distinction between pre and post construction images. Through several study cases, referencing models, photographs and digital drawings, this work emphasizes the images power of substitution, mediatization, consecration and aestheticizing of architecture. We will also argue that technically decoded architectural images of today are more accessible to those outside the profession, offering a level of interactivity driven by the rise of digital culture. To summarise, Architecture as Image, Built Work as Representation: subjectivity of architectural images, is an optimist view of the image, its seductive appeal and its influence on the construction of ideas and memory in architecture and cultural production.
