Shopping Centers have become essential places for our day-to-day. More than being a simple building where it is possible to shop or access to services, they are authentic cities dedicated to consumption. The architecture works here as a marketing element, and the efficiency of his draw translates into profit. The thesis begins by identifying which are the main concepts implied in the term Shopping Center, synthesized in an equation: the Building that contains City, elevated to Consumption, is the Shopping Center. Next, I analyze those that are considered the premodels of this typology, in the European and North American contexto. This analysis then focuses on the Portuguese panorama and particularly in the city of Guimarães, where I analyze in detail three shopping centres: the “Palmeiras”, the Guimarães Shopping and the Espaço Guimarães. This chronological and increasingly centered approach in Guimarães culminates in a speculation about how will be shopping center in the future or, more specifically, about how will be the next shopping center of Guimarães – a world heritage city.por
