| dc.description.abstract | The production effect consists of the greater recall of words read aloud compared to words read in silence. Some theories have tried to explain this phenomenon, and it is the heuristics of distinctiveness that has taken on relevance, arguing that words read aloud have more distinctive elements and thus become distinct from words read in silence. Since this effect increases, in general, the ability to remember, it is important to understand whether it is strong enough to resist to forgetting through proactive inhibition, a form of forgetting that means that previous memories interfere with the retrieval of more recent ones. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether proactive inhibition affects the production effect. Therefore, it was expected that the magnitude of the production effect will decrease, depending on the list, due to retrieval decrement caused by proactive interference. In Experiment 1, the participants studied three lists of words (half of which were read aloud and the other half in silence) and after the presentation of each list they performed immediately a free recall memory task. The results obtained revealed the presence of a production effect, since words read out loud were recalled more effectively in comparison to the words read in silence. However, there has been no decrease in this effect as the lists were presented. Results also showed that there was no proactive inhibition between different lists, considering. We also found that the participants did not use the type of production as a recall strategy. In Experiment 1 there was also a lower proportion of words recalled in the first list, in comparison to the other two lists. In order to understand this result, a second experiment was required, in which we introduced a recall task in the training phase and instructed the participants about the memory test to be performed latter. The results of Experiment 2 followed the same pattern as the results of the first experiment, with the exception of increasing the proportion of words mentioned in the first list, concluding that having explicit knowledge about the recovery task to be performed improves the performance of the participants. | por |
