| dc.description.abstract | Since Xi Jinping was elected President of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 2013, several studies have sought to analyse the uniqueness of his leadership, vision and narratives aimed at consolidating power, such as the Chinese Dream and the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). However, the existing literature has not carried out a simultaneous and exhaustive comparison between the narratives of the three most charismatic Chinese leaders, namely Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping and Xi Jinping. Based on this gap, and recognising the added value of the topic, this dissertation aims to answer the following research question: ‘How does Xi Jinping's narrative approach and/or distance itself from the narratives of Mao and Deng in order to consolidate power?’. As such, the time frame of our research covers the period beginning in 1954 and ending in 2023. The period in question encompasses the time when Mao was elected President of the PRC, the Deng Xiaoping era (1978-1990) and, finally, the first 10 years of the Chinese Belt and Road (2013-2024), seen as Xi Jinping's narrative par excellence. In fact, we believe that a decade of the BRI’s existence, closely associated with the Chinese Dream, is fundamental to tracing the main similarities and differences between the leaderships of Xi, Mao and Deng. To this end, we used a qualitative methodology comprising both primary and secondary sources, and supported by the contributions of the so-called Role Theory, whose variables - role conception, role expectations, role adaptation and role performance - allow us to better compare the different views and narratives (role conceptions) of the various leaders in relation to their role performance, taking into account the expectations (role expectations) of the Chinese population at a given historical juncture. In conclusion, we found that each leader endeavoured to adapt his role (role adaptation) to better accommodate structural needs, domestic expectations and, above all, to preserve power. In Xi's case, his leadership has been more adaptable than Mao's, although less reform-orientated than Deng's. | por |
