No entanto, a literatura contém resultados inconclusivos acerca desta relação. Para a operacionalização das variáveis, foram utilizados o “Utrecht Work Engagement Scale” (Sinval et al. 2014), de Schaufeli e Baker; o “Oldenburg Burnout Inventory” (Sinval et al., 2019), de Demerouti e Nachreiner; e três subescalas do “Questionnaire on the Experience and Evaluation of Work” de Van Veldhoven et al. (2015).
Burnout and engagement depict the negative and positive ends respectively of a spectrum of well-being of workers. Stress triggering factors, like workload, frequently cause burnout and lower levels of engagement. However, previous studies have shown inconclusive results about this relation. This study’s goal is to focus on clarifying the relationship between workload and the levels of burnout and work engagement, as well as identifying in which way the levels of burnout and engagement affect each other. The sample was formed by recruiting 200 workers from a grocery retailer from Portugal. To operationalize the variables, it was used the “Utrecht Work Engagement Scale” (Sinval et al. 2014), from Schaufeli and Baker; the “Oldenburg Burnout Inventory” (Sinval et al., 2019), from Demerouti and Nachreiner; and three subscales from the “Questionnaire on the Experience and Evaluation of Work” from Van Veldhoven et al. (2015). The results showed a significant and positive relation between workload and burnout, as well as a significant but negative one with engagement. Furthermore, it was found a significant and negative relation between engagement and burnout. It is hoped that these results bring some understanding and thought about the importance of this subject and the need to expand it.por
