| dc.description.abstract | In recent decades, many studies have shown that telicity is essential in verbal semantic acquisition (Slabakova, 2001). In German, some authors (Schulz, 2018; van Hout, 1998) suggest a distinction between strong telicity markers (e.g., resultative particles and adjectives), determined via semantic implication, and weak telicity markers (e.g., bounded objects), which determine the event’s aspectual value pragmatically. In Portuguese, telicity can only be determined at the verb level or through its combination with specific complements (Cunha, 2013; Oliveira, 2003). In the discourse domain, the property of ‘boundedness’ results from the interaction between many aspectual mechanisms (Depraetere, 1995). Studies show that speakers resort to this property to organize discourse temporally, according to their language’s typological features (Bylund, 2011; von Stutterheim et al., 2003). The present work aims to fill the existing gap of the research on these properties in the contrast between German and Portuguese and has as main goals: 1) to evaluate the knowledge of telicity markers in German by various types of speakers; 2) to identify the narrative strategies employed by these speakers to describe events. 129 adult speakers of German were tested, including 45 Portuguese speakers of L2 German, 29 German minority-language (or heritage) bilinguals, 34 German majority-language bilinguals, and 21 monolinguals. To test these properties, two interpretation tasks (Sentence Conjunction Task and Truth-Value Judgment Task) and one production task (Film Retelling Task) were conducted. The results show that speakers do not have many difficulties interpreting the different types of telicity markers. L2 speakers seem to have more difficulties interpreting verb particles, compared to resultative adjectives, which suggests an effect of lexical transparency (van Hout, 1998). At the production level, native speakers prefer to narrate events holistically and use the present as narrative tense, while L2 speakers adopt a deictic perspective and make more use of past tenses. It thus appears that the lexical development of L2 speakers is essential for the correct interpretation of telicity markers. L1 properties also seem to condition the way speakers conceptualize events in discourse. | eng |
