Empathy and executive functioning can play a fundamental role in predicting criminal and violent behaviour. Studies show that violent individuals have lower empathy and executive deficits when compared to non-violent individuals. The aim of this study was to analyse executive functioning and empathy in male inmates and any differences between individuals imprisoned for violent and non-violent crimes. The sample consisted of 142 individuals, 73 in prison for non-violent offences and 69 for violent offences, aged between 22 and 76 (M= 39.19, SD = 10.998). The Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) and the Basic Empathy Scale (BES) were used for the necessary assessment. The results show that the inmate population had more global and affective empathy and better executive functioning than the normative population, that individuals who committed non violent offences had more total and cognitive empathy and that violent offenders had a higher prevalence of executive dysfunction. There were also significant positive correlations between empathy and executive functioning. The results of this study are relevant for the early identification of young people at risk and for the development of rehabilitation and social reintegration programmes.por
