| dc.description.abstract | The literature refers to the family, in particular the parents and siblings, as elements with which we establish the first relationships. It is in this core that we obtain reference, support and safety figures. When a sibling is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the family’s dynamics tend to be affected by changes in order to adjust to the specificities and needs of the child with ASD. Whether in their routines, whether in managing family quality time, these changes can lead to consequences in terms of behavior and socio-emotional skills, which can affect the relationship between siblings with and without ASD. In this sense, this study pretends to get to know, analyze and understand ASD’s influence in the relationship between siblings with and without ASD, considering the teenager sibling’s perspective. The main goals of this investigation are to understand the knowledge that teenager siblings without ASD have on the disorder; to understand the perception that siblings have on ASD’s influence in the dynamics and relationships between parents and children without ASD and to understand the sibling’s perception regarding the knowledge and assurance of their siblings rights. For this research study it was implemented a methodology of qualitative nature with a descriptive analysis. The data was obtained through semi structured interviews with eight siblings aged between 10- 17. The obtained data showed that siblings without ASD who have a better knowledge about this disorder are in fact more understanding and tolerant siblings, and they try to establish close and united relationships with the sibling with ASD. Although they share the view that their parents devote more time to their brother with ASD, they emphasize that he needs it and try to help him. It’s clear that both siblings, without ASD and with ASD, learn from each other. Furthermore, two of the siblings mention the informal support of grandparents and uncles in family dynamics, which can be a stress-relieving factor. | por |
