| dc.description.abstract | The present thesis, entitled “Inclusion of students with intellectual disabilities in regular elementary school classes in the city of Manaus: a critical analysis based on the voices of the subjects involved in the process”, had as its main goal understanding the main barriers that hinder the process of inclusion of students with intellectual disabilities in regular elementary school classes, as well as the facilitating aspects of the current inclusion model implemented by the Municipal Department of Education (SEMED) of the city of Manaus. With this, it was verified what the benefits of inclusion are, as well as what are the main barriers that hinder its implementation. To this end, the voices of several subjects who in some way are participants and protagonists of this process were heard. The theoretical framework used came from a bibliographical survey carried out in a database of national and international theses and articles on the topic in question. The empirical study was carried out in five schools in the public municipal education system of Manaus, selected as inclusive because they had several students with intellectual disabilities enrolled and attending their regular education classes. The methodological option was a qualitative approach, with case studies and data collection carried out through interviews. The research subjects were five managers, pedagogical coordinators, teachers, parents of students with intellectual disabilities, parents of students without disabilities and five students diagnosed with intellectual disabilities, making a total of 35 subjects. The data was analyzed following the content analysis guidelines of Bardin (2011) . Among the results highlighted by the research, it is highlighted that education professionals present very traditional conceptions about the concept, characteristics and development of students with intellectual disabilities, seeing intellectual disability through the lens of the biological medical model, ignoring that the influences of environment and established social interactions can contribute to improving students' social and cognitive development. Among the school factors that need to be modified so that the inclusion policy is actually implemented and improved, the following stand out: the reduction in the number of students in elementary school classes that included students with disabilities; more direct and collaborative contact between teachers in regular classes and teachers in resource rooms in order to improve the learning of students with disabilities; continuing training policies to better train teachers, especially in regular classes, so that they can develop quality education for all students, especially for students with intellectual disabilities; improvements in school infrastructure and acquisition of pedagogical resources adapted to the needs of students with disabilities. The results also indicate that the main objectives of the special education policy from the perspective of inclusive education are not being achieved, since students with intellectual disabilities, despite having access to schools, do not participate effectively in school activities and are not actually able to learn. curricular knowledge due to the lack of adaptations suited to their needs. | por |
