The general objective of this dissertation is to understand the stigma perceived by female sex workers in the North of Portugal, and to compare these discourses with what university students from the University of Minho think about the subject. As a way to obtain these meanings, we chose a mixed methodology, with bibliographic analysis and also using semi-structured interviews, applied to these women, and questionnaire surveys carried out with a sample of university students To discuss stigma, we used the studies by Erving Goffman, given the breadth of his analysis of stigma from a social perspective and, in a second moment, we used Serge Moscovici's Theory of Social Representations and Jean Claude Abric's Core Theory as a starting point to understand the way sex work by sex workers manifests itself in their lives and in their interactions with the community at large. Through the discourses of the interviewed sex workers, we perceived motivations of individual, economic, family, and social dimensions that surround their entry and maintenance in this area of work. We used their narratives to create statements that were later presented to university students. With the analysis of the questionnaire survey results, Abric's theory (1994) was used to uncover the central core and peripheries of the envisioned social representations. Although modest, the results of this study can help assess the power of stigma associated with the practice of sex work and how women respond to the stigma associated with their professionpor
