| dc.description.abstract | Sport plays a fundamental role in the social inclusion and development of people with disabilities, promoting physical, psychological and social benefits. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic on the preparation of Paralympic athletes with physical disabilities in Portugal, taking into account the physical, emotional and social aspects of this experience. The data collection instrument used was designed for this study and was completed by 112 participants, including coaches, family members/caregivers and athletes, who practiced a Paralympic sport in mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira during the period under study. The significant participation of the athletes (40.2%) suggests a direct involvement in the subject under study, ensuring the validity of the perceptions presented. The age of the athletes ranged from 16 to 65, with an average age of 39. In terms of gender, 29 participants were female (25.9%) and 79 were male (70.5%). The results of this study show that: a) 71.4% of the participants reported significant interruptions in their training routines, mainly due to the closure of facilities and lack of access to adapted resources; b) with regard to the athletes' performance, 78.5% indicated that the restrictions had a "significant" or "very significant" impact, indicating a general negative effect; c) with regard to the degree of involvement of family and/or caregivers in making training effective, 60.7% highlighted the expanded role of family members and caregivers, who took a greater lead in providing support during the pandemic period. The conclusions of the study emphasize that the pandemic has exacerbated existing structural barriers in sport for people with disabilities, with a significant impact on training routines, athletic performance and family support. This study contributes to the understanding of the impact of global crises on adapted sport, and reinforces the urgency of inclusive policies that ensure continuity and equity of access to Paralympic sport in adverse scenarios. | por |
