Female Genital Mutilation, traditionally practiced on the African continent, spread to other continents mainly through immigration, making Portugal a risk country for these practices. They violate the rights and freedoms of countless girls and women, genuinely affecting their lives with temporary and/or permanent consequences, the study of which forms the main objective of this dissertation. Initially, it was essential to collect and systematize the existing bibliography on the concept, prevalence, associated practices, punishability, and consequences of this practice in the short and long term. In addition, an online empirical study was developed with 188 victim support professionals, which allowed us to understand their perceptions regarding this practice, focusing on the consequences and impact on victims. The main results reveal a lack of training and investment in this area, as 72.9% of professionals do not have knowledge about and only 10.6% provide assistance to this type of victim. Furthermore, the majority of reported consequences are psychological (64.9%) and physical (67.6%), namely anxiety, depression, sexual, and menstrual problems, and infections associated with the urinary system. It is not enough for there to be a legal type that provides for this situation, it is also necessary to develop moments of awareness, not only for professionals who work in this area but also for the rest of the community. The aim will be to educate them about the harmful effects of the practice and to alert them to reporting it, thus increasing the rates of seeking help from the victims themselves. Investing in studies in this area is still fundamental to repress crime.por
