The Sampaio, Ferreira & Cia. factory in Riba d'Ave is an exemplary case of the deindustrialization effects in the river Ave watershed. After a period of decay, the company declared bankruptcy and this process resulted in abandonment, progressive degradation, and ruin of its facilities which, at the same time, were re-signified as industrial heritage of the region. This research identified that the discourse on which the heritage making process was structured was based on hegemonic memory narratives about its founder, Narciso Ferreira, and about Sampaio, Ferreira & Cia. itself and their roles in the industrialization of Vale do Ave; which highlighted positive perspectives and actively forgot negative or divergent aspects. The analysis of Sampaio, Ferreira & Cia. was structured on a long-term perspective (1896- 2019); on a systematic analysis of different types of documents (texts, iconography and material culture); and on a methodology centred on History, but with an interdisciplinary approach on the investigated phenomenon, as proposed by Industrial Archaeology. The research starts from a problematic of the present, the abandonment and ruin of the factory complex and its heritage making process, to show how these hegemonic memory narratives were structured; what are the multiple manifestations they assume; how they were used; and how they relate to the trajectory of the factory’s built material culture. The research shows that the different shapes assumed by hegemonic memory narratives over time contributed to perpetuate dominant memories and acted as instruments of political and social strengthening, even if, at times, only symbolically. This persistent memory enabled society to recognize Sampaio, Ferreira & Cia., and other buildings related to the factory and Narciso Ferreira and their heirs in Riba d'Ave, as symbols of the values associated with them. Thus, even after the end of the productive activity and the subsequent abandonment and ruin of the factory, the hegemonic narratives were adapted to the new reality and presented as heritage discourses.por
