| dc.description.abstract | This project explores the ways in which the anticolonial labour unions that attempted to act upon Angola’s territories and populations sought to challenge the legitimacy of Portuguese colonial rule and claim to be the legitimate representatives of the Angolan workers. Facing the regimes of repression that existed in said territory, these organizations sought out international support and recognition, especially within the International Labour Organization (ILO), a topic that this work explores with great detail. The existence of multiple national liberation movements in Angola made it so that the labour unions here mentioned, the National Union of Angolan Workers (UNTA) and the General League of the Workers of Angola (LGTA) had to navigate the international arenas while also taking part in the intra-nationalistic struggle as a way of ensuring their role in future independent Angola. Having to deal with growing international pressure regarding its labour regime, the Portuguese empire saw the issue of labour-unionism, in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, become a broader vehicle for critics of imperial rule as a whole, motivating a series of internal debates. By exploring a series of national and international archives, this dissertation seeks to understand how the problem of labour unionism was instrumentalized both by anticolonial activists, who sought to equate free trade-unionism to self-determination, and the Portuguese empire, who sought to strategically reform, or at least give the impression of doing so, labour realities in its overseas colonies, specifically Angola. | por |
