Abstract

Numa época caraterizada pela desagregação das audiências nos media audiovisuais, Game of Thrones constituiu o último momento em que existiu uma convergência global de públicos em conteúdos televisivos. O objetivo deste artigo é colocar um conjunto de hipóteses para justificar este fenómeno, a partir da análise dos principais ingredientes da série: a combinação de humor, violência e erotismo, a associação de elementos fantásticos com uma ambiência baseada em referências históricas, a importância da perceção da passagem do tempo na narrativa, a presença constante da morte e o uso de cenários reais, reconhecíveis apesar da sua manipulação digital. A trajetória particular que carateriza a relação entre a produção da HBO e a narrativa publicada em livro também interessa a este texto, sobretudo a partir do momento em que os textos de George R. R. Martin deixaram de poder constituir uma referência para o guião, porque a série ultrapassou a história relatada nos volumes publicados.

In an era characterized by the disaggregation of audiences in audio-visual media, Game of Thrones was the last moment in which there was a global convergence of the public on a television content. The purpose of this text is to raise a set of hypotheses to justify this phenomenon, based on the analysis of the main ingredients of the series: the combination of humour, violence and eroticism, the association of fantastic elements with historical references, the importance of the passage of time in the narrative, the constant presence of death and the use of real scenarios, recognizable despite their digital manipulation. The particular trajectory that characterizes the relationship between the series and the narrative of the books is also important for this essay, especially from the moment in which George R. R. Martin's texts could not constitute a reference for the script, because the series went beyond the contents of the published volumes.
