| dc.description.abstract | This work aimed to investigate the perceptions of early childhood education professionals regarding the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the emotional well-being of preschool-aged children, namely whether it contributed to the emergence or worsening of anxiety among this age group. Considering these professionals as key informants in these processes, we sought to hear their views on any perceived differences in the levels of anxiety and general well-being of children aged between 3 and 6 years old before the pandemic and the same age group in the post-pandemic period. The study was conducted using focus groups with nine preschool teachers and five operational assistants working in public preschool education contexts in urban, rural, and semi-rural areas in northern Portugal. The results of the study revealed that children in this age group experience anxiety in their daily lives in the preschool education context, which is attributed to several factors that are not limited to the pandemic period. According to these professionals, it is especially in the anxiety of parents, their fast-paced lifestyle, their limited availability (physical and emotional) for the child, and/or their lack of patience in dealing with their demands (for affection, attention, time to play) that lies at the root of most of the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral manifestations observed among these children, which denote the presence of anxiety in their lives. In other words, it seems that some of the discomfort and developmental delays observed by this group of professionals among the children they deal with daily in their work context (born shortly before, during, or shortly after the pandemic) are a “collateral” effect of the parents' own discomfort and “unavailability,” giving rise to poorer proximal processes (in terms of stimulation, affection, attention), which are more tense and/or less attentive to their “rhythms” and developmental characteristics. In the final considerations of this paper, some suggestions for intervention and research are offered with a view to a broader and deeper understanding of the phenomena under work. | por |
