This thesis explores peripheral interaction, a type of interaction that takes advantage of the human attention capabilities to create interactions with technology that alternate between the center and periphery of attention. In this way, human interaction with technology becomes cognitively less demanding, non-intrusive and integrates naturally into their daily lives. Since smartphones are the technology that human beings carry most often in their daily lives, it is believed that they have the potential to have this type of interaction. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is to assess the application of peripheral interaction to the mobile context. In the research inTouch, a functional prototype of a smartphone application, was developed and evaluated, where the effectiveness of peripheral interaction in this context and the ability of symbolic communication to potentiate peripheral interaction were tested. This thesis is essentially organized in two parts: the first part provides a literature review, where a preliminary categorization of peripheral interaction types is proposed, and where relevant concepts of human-computer interaction and human attention are explored; the second part describes the design, implementation and evaluation of inTouch, includes two exploratory studies and the discussion of the evaluation results. Finally, the conclusions present the main contributions of the research, the identified limitations and recommendations for future research. The evaluation of inTouch revealed significant results on the application of peripheral interaction to smartphones and on the potential of symbolic communication in that context. The results suggest that it provides a more intuitive user experience adapted to the user's cognitive abilities, and that the application of symbolic elements facilitates communication and favor the alternation between the periphery and the center of attention. However, the results differ in terms of mitigating the negative effects of the ubiquity of technology and integrating the prototype into users' daily routines. This thesis contributes to peripheral interaction by proposing a preliminary categorization of types of peripheral interaction, by exploring a new hypothesis of potentiating this type of interaction through symbolic communication and by highlighting the need to approach the user experience from an emotional perspective.por
