| dc.description.abstract | Self-regulation (SR) of social and individual processes, is a vital adaptation process to environmental (stress, procrastination, relaxation, attention, climbing a set of stairs or a mountain, etc) and social challenges (communication, presentation, social network exposure, conflict management, etc). Indispensable, in our growing hiper-techonological and hiper-stimulative society. In neurophysiological terms, the adaptation process to challenges depends critically on the brain’s ability to carefully control the time within – and transitions among – different states. Neurofeedback Training (NFT) is one of the techniques used to teach this kind of control. In the current protocols, the benefits from NFT greatly differ between subjects, i.e. a high percentage of subjects are missing a satisfactory performance in voluntary control of the electrophysiological and hemodynamic processes being trained (inefficacy ~ 30-40%). As such, understanding how to assist self-regulation in Neurofeedback protocols is of great importance. Some works in the literature hypothesize that the “optimal” state of SR learning using Neurofeedback is reached when irrelevant associations between internal states and external reward are avoided (e.g. “Can I really control my brain?”, “It’s me that who really is controlling the feedback?”), and when the learner stays engaged, focused and undistracted. In most previous studies, a percentage of subjects are missing a satisfactory performance in voluntary control of the electrophysiological and hemodynamic processes being trained. As such, we hypothesize if priming the mental states of participants can alter the performance of SR. In order to answer this, we developed a novel priming open source framework. Starting from theoretical foundations, then the design, followed by the open source software and by the framework study applications (Experiment 1 and 2). Finally, throughout the last chapters, we discuss the process, problems, solutions, methods, results, and future possibilities. Highlighting that priming subjects with external neurostimulation, based on mindfulness meditation techniques, significatively affects the NFT performance comparing to no-priming intervention (in electroencephalographic and state self-reports measurements). These results validate our assisted priming framework and indicate its usefulness in affecting the capacity to self-regulate the neurofeedback. | por |
