| dc.description.abstract | One of the greatest challenges researchers face today lies in effectively communicating complex concepts to non-specialized audiences. However, empirical evidence shows that by employing audiovisual means, these researchers not only engage the audience visually, auditorily, and emotionally but also reach a broader audience. This intersection between science and audiovisual media dates back to the early days of cinema when the cinematograph emerged from the scientific investigations of Eadweard Muybridge and Etienne-Jules Marey, focused on the study of animal motion in the late 19th century. Decades later, we arrive at what is known as the 'Golden Age' of science in cinema, where films like Avatar (2009) and Jurassic World (2015), rooted in science and technology, rank among the highest-grossing films of all time. However, the influence of science extends beyond technological advancements, encompassing values, attitudes, and social and cultural practices, driven by the dissemination of scientific culture in media and entertainment. In this context, we ask: how is cinema influencing our perception of science? While several scholars have explored this question in recent decades, little attention has been given to a rising domain: independent cinema. Unlike commercial productions, ‘indie’ cinema offers space for innovative approaches and unconventional narratives, captivating an audience seeking alternatives to mainstream culture. This study aims to precisely identify representations of science in independent films, drawing on the 239 short animated, fictional, and documentary films submitted to the 2023 Braga Science Film Fest, an international science film festival. The analysis will seek to understand how independent cinema portrays complex scientific concepts, scientists, and the scientific process in general, identifying recurring themes and fields of research in cinematic narratives. From a scientific perspective, this study will aim to provide a deeper and more contextualized analysis of the role of independent cinema in science communication. | por |
