The professionalisation of occupations is a process undertaken to achieve its social closure and, consequently, to obtain economical and symbolical advantages. Combined with this objective, the more recent contributes from the sociology of professions highlight the importance of taking into account the historic process of the building of professions and the analysis of the impact that the various social actors, in particular the State, assume in the respective configuration. Therefore, seeking to contribute to the desired increase in the number of studies on the process of professionalisation of concrete occupations, both in the international and in the national literature, this research has the main objective of analysing the historical process of professionalisation of the Portuguese accountants. An interpretative analysis of the referred process, within the framework of a qualitative research methodology and resorting to interviews and historical documents as sources of information, is used to, in particular, identify the social actors involved in the process, the strategies they have adopted and the causes for the long journey, marked by successive advances and retreats. According to the results of our research, the tax reform initiated in the late 1950s was crucial to the true start of the process of professionalisation of the Portuguese accountants. The dictatorial political regime in Portugal was initially the main cause of non-regulation of the profession; with the overthrow of that regime, the struggle within the profession carried out by private associations of accountants was its greater cause. Later on, in a particularly disputed process between those associations and the State, the increasing pressure by those associations on the political power acted as the determining factor for the implementation of the regulation sought for decades. The State plays an indispensable role in the projects of professionalisation of occupations, but, despite that, this research shows that the support it provides to those projects is mainly dependent on the political, economic and social conditions prevailing at any given time and space.por
