This dissertation, entitled “Travelling in Wes Anderson’s Cinema. Space and Movement in Three Feature Films”, analyses the relationship between architecture and cinema, focusing on the tracking shot as both a cinematic and architectural tool in Wes Anderson’s works. The tracking shot, understood as the continuous movement of the camera, reveals depth, geometry, and spatial interactions, connecting them to the narrative. To this end, the study examines three films by Wes Anderson – “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” (2004); “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) and “The French Dispatch” (2021) – selected for their temporal diversity, which allows for an analysis of the director evolving visual style. Three types of tracking shots are explored: lateral, frontal and hybrid. These camera movements resonate with spatial analysis tools: cross-sections, perspective sections and axonometric projections, respectively. The lateral tracking shot is associated with cross-sections, exploring continuity and segmentation of space; the frontal tracking shot relates to perspective sections, emphasizing depth and the idea of orientation; and the hybrid tracking shot is linked to axonometric projections, as this tool provides a three-dimensional view that reveals the entirety of spaces, evoking notions of scale and depth. The research is structured into three chapters. The first chapter, “Movement in Cinema”, introduces the tracking shot within the broader context of cinema, analysing its historical evolution and its application in the works of 20th century filmmakers. This chapter presents the three types of tracking shots examined – lateral, frontal and hybrid – and explores how they transform narrative. The second chapter, “Tracking shots in Wes Anderson’s Cinema”, delves deeper into the use of tracking shots in Anderson’s films. The third, and last chapter, “Space in Three Feature Films by Wes Anderson”, deepens the analysis of architectural space in the selected films, focusing on the interaction between décor, camera movement (tracking shots), and narrative. Scenes are analysed using film stills as well as graphic representations such as plans, sections, and axonometric drawings, to demonstrate how movement structures the Reading of space. To complement the analysis developed throughout the three chapters, this research is accompanied by a Volume II, which brings together a series of graphic representations derived from the analysed frames. This additional volume includes sections, axonometric projections, and plans that visually convey the intersection between architecture and cinema.por
