| dc.description.abstract | This study is part of a larger project entitled Teachers Exercising Leadership (TEL) financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (PTDC/CPE CED/112164/2009), carried out at the Research Centre for Child Studies, Institute of Education, University of Minho. This work relates to the phase II of the TEL project whose data were collected through focus groups with teachers at 2nd and 3rd cycles of elementary and secondary education. The focus groups were performed between November 2012 and April 2013. In total, 53 teachers participated in this study from eleven schools in mainland Portugal, from educational contexts that have different characteristics, which allowed us to collect a plurality of voices taking into account the experiences of each of the teachers involved in the study. From data analysis the following categories emerged: i) changes in the work of schools and teachers; ii) factors that lead to professional satisfaction and dissatisfaction; iii) prevalent feelings and emotions and iv) working methods and relationship between teachers. The results from the testimonies of teachers point to a negative view about the recent legislative changes and the lack of valorization of the teachers with special emphasis on the role of the media. Although they recognize themselves as professionals committed to their students and their learning the changes in the work of schools and teachers, in the last few years, teachers’ lives have been negatively affected and this is visible in their perceptions, feelings and emotions with impact in their modes of professional relationships and job satisfaction. | por |
