The thesis “Witches, elves and sorceresses: Female Representations in Fantasy Cinema” aims to analyze female representations in films and television series from the Western fantastic panorama, in an attempt to understand, through a film analysis (e.g. Penafria, 2009 ), perspective framed by feminist critical theory (e.g. Lauretis (1984), Butler (1990, Solloway (2016), Brey (2022)), how women are represented in the Western fantasy film genre. The relevance of this investigation is related to the fact that fantasy has a growing number of fans in recent years, who have fun discussing the details of their chosen works (Correia, 2021, p. 146). The idea that women are not interested in the fantastic ignores decades of female participation with fantastic narratives as a space for feminist imagination (Ferraday, 2015, p. 24), on the one hand, and the persistence of problems such as “misogyny, sexism and behavior genderized” (Murray, 2020, p. 70), on the other. Furthermore, fantasy productions, whether on television or cinema, have been increasing (Kruske, 2022). This reality makes it possible for these to be audiovisual contents with an increasingly greater influence on the representations (Hall, 1997) that they propose and present, and it is therefore necessary to deepen knowledge on the subject. With regard to the fantasy genre, feminist criticism has postponed the study of the female heroine as an archetype in her own right, because in addition to the absence of female representations, women in fantasy have been, for the most part, made invisible, and it used to be unlikely that a woman ventured into battle without male protection (Campbell, 2010, p. 4, our translation). Therefore, with this study, we want to highlight, based on the filmic analysis of the corpus constructed within the framework of the doctoral project, the contents of the filmic representations and their narrative and visual expression, as well as some of the social implications of these choices, regarding the issue of gender asymmetries.por
