| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation aims to analyse the contribution of social innovation in higher education student residences to the integration of students from Portuguese-speaking African countries and Timor-Leste (PALOP & TL). Based on the premise that residences are not only spaces of accommodation but also privileged contexts for socialisation, intercultural learning, and personal development, the study seeks to understand, from the perspective of directors/managers, how these structures can foster inclusive dynamics, promote psychosocial well-being, and enhance the academic success of these students. The methodology adopts a qualitative approach, based on semi-structured interviews conducted with directors/managers of student residences located in the Northern region of Portugal. The results show that this integration process is marked by multidimensional vulnerability, including economic, bureaucratic, academic, and social challenges, with residences playing a central role in ensuring students’ stability and academic success. Residences thus emerge as key spaces for reception, integration, and support. The analysis reveals a heterogeneous landscape, in which different institutional responses coexist. Public residences tend to operate through more standardised models, whereas third sector residences demonstrate greater flexibility and relational proximity, albeit with more limited impact due to their smaller scale. The identified social innovation practices constitute emerging responses that are often neither structured nor integrated into institutional strategies, which limits their sustainability. The study therefore highlights the need to develop more coordinated, consistent, and diversity-sensitive approaches capable of promoting more effective and inclusive integration of these students. | eng |
