This dissertation aims to explore J.R.R. Tolkien's work in terms of the idea of the city, using the analysis of Minas Tirith as a case study. The aim is to understand how urban spaces were imagined in the world created by Tolkien and to analyze the influences that inspired the author to design cities. The first part focuses on the author, J.R.R. Tolkien, his work and the concepts he created and developed, namely primary world, secondary world, legendarium, mythopoetics, eucatastrophe and sub-creation. This is followed by a contextualization of the cities and kingdoms that directly influenced the creation of Minas Tirith, encompassing an extensive time arc, to address the most important places in Tolkien's work. The social, political and cultural context that each kingdom and city went through is discussed and analyzed, as well as the organization, design and architecture of the different cities. In the second part, the aim is to explore the White City of Minas Tirith in more detail: how it is organized socially and structurally, its symbolism and importance in Tolkien's work, its main influences, and how it is represented in film and illustration. The dissertation also aims to look at the historical influences that played a major role in the characterization and organization of cities and kingdoms. Thus, different moments in the history of Western civilization will be analysed, seeking to establish relationships between these different cultures and the kingdoms created by Tolkien, both socially, politically and culturally, as well as in terms of the design and organization of cities. The characteristics of the medieval city will be explored in greater depth, as they establish greater links with the city of Minas Tirith. Therefore, this dissertation is an opportunity to analyse Tolkien's work and understand the organization and evolution of the cities he created, establishing relations between the fictional world and history. The aim is to show how fiction and reality influence each other in a reciprocal way, and how it is possible for fictional cities to influence the design of urban space and contemporary design thinking.eng
