| dc.description.abstract | Bacteriophage therapy is an emergent alternative to treat highly resistant bacteria. It consists of applying bacteriophages to eliminate specific pathogenic bacteria in a patient. It portrays several advantages, but the co-evolution between virus and host regularly prevents the infection from the infective agent. Hence, it is imperative to investigate the proteins that drive recognition, specifically the Receptor Binding Proteins (RBPs). These proteins suffer numerous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and other mutations to accompany the adaptation rate of the bacteria phage receptors. Considering this, the PhageSNP tool aims to identify the mutations that promote this behavior. It is an annotation tool employing a Machine Learning mechanism to isolate all the RBP sequences within an unfamiliar genome. It also offers an in-depth analysis of all potential SNPs within each extracted sequence, assessing their predicted impact. We evaluate its RBP prediction performance on 100 random Staphylococcus bacteriophage genomes and its innovative SNP annotation feature as possible. In summary, PhageSNP provides a groundbreaking approach for the host range expansion analysis, exhibiting great RBP annotation results and SNPs sustained by robust theoretical research.
