| dc.description.abstract | The increasing focus on work-life balance in current employment discussions, coupled with the arrival of Generation Z into the workforce, highlights the need to understand how younger employees view this balance and how it influences their work experience. This dissertation aims to explore how Generation Z perceives and articulates work-life balance, its connection to job satisfaction, and the non-work areas they prioritize in shaping this balance. The study was based on an interpretivist paradigm and employed a qualitative approach, involving semistructured interviews with 22 Generation Z participants, all of whom had at least 12 months of paid work experience and were employed at the time of the interview. The sample was chosen through purposive sampling, supplemented by snowball sampling, and the data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that work-life balance is not a strict separation between work and personal spheres. Instead, it is a context-dependent process of balancing work demands with personal life, often without sacrificing the latter. The study also shows that the “life” component extends beyond family to include health, physical activity, social and emotional relationships, leisure, and personal pursuits. Additionally, there is a noted preference for establishing clearer boundaries between work and personal life. The findings also suggest that a good work-life balance enhances job satisfaction by promoting rest, recovery, well-being, and enabling engagement in non-work activities that are valuable in their own right. However, ongoing work intrusion into personal life can undermine this balance. The research further indicates that maintaining such a balance depends on organisational conditions and influences the attractiveness of job opportunities, as well as employees’ decisions to stay with or leave the organisation. | eng |
