The main goal of this work is the definition and delimitation of the concept of lexicographic unit, demonstrating the adequacy of certain syntagmatic structures as unities of analysis and lexicographic description. We understand by lexicographic unities those categories that are defined by: 1) a variable character; 2) not being necessarily compositional; 3) not having a discrete but a gradual and continuous character; 4) not being independent from the co-text as well as from the context where they belong; 5) not being entirely described by the general rules of grammar. To ignore the fact that the syntagmatic relations established amongst words within a certain structure are part of their signification would lead to an understanding of the enunciate as a combination of discrete elements (words, monemes) and, consequently, to errors at the level of lexicographic analysis, such as the attribution of a fixed meaning to a word, which, in reality, is gained from the combination of that word with others. The lexicographic work should be based on a referential system capable of relating lexical structures to structures of knowledge, which, in practice, make it impossible to separate the material that should be registered in a dictionary from the one that belongs to an encyclopaedia or a terminological dictionary (the method that is used to define that material is, however, a different concern). This work also comprehends a Portuguese/Spanish contrastive component. These languages have a very approximate vocabulary, as well as very similar grammatical rules, which allows for interferences and fossilized structures, particularly in the process of codification, to appear in the interlinguistic system built during the process of acquisition of the target language. Thus, the bilingual Spanish/ Portuguese dictionary should devote a special attention to issues concerning the lexical combinatory and the pragmatic-contextual usage which is made of an “almost” common vocabulary.eng
