Early childhood education institutions (ECEIs) serving children between 0 and 5 years of age are increasingly becoming a field of action for specialist music teachers (SMTs). This reality is not visible in the literature. Thus, this study sought to investigate how the presence of SMTs occurs in ECEIs in the cases of Portugal and Brazil, and what are the contributions of these professionals to the musical experience and education of children. The goals of the study were: to map the presence of SMTs in ECEIs in the two cases studied; to describe the profile of the ECEIs and of the SMTs; to understand the participants' conception of SMT and of their professional training; to describe and evaluate the activities and contributions of SMTs to the musical experience and education of children. A mixed approach Multiple Case Study was developed, involving SMT and ECEI representatives in Portugal and Brazil. The results indicate that: the presence of SMTs is a significant reality in the territory of both countries, both in public and private ECEIs, and can be three times higher in the latter; SMTs have mainly higher education in music, with a higher prevalence in Brazil; the predominant employment relationship is that of a self-employed worker in Portugal and that of a permanent/indefinite contract in Brazil; the Brazilian SMTs are more integrated in the attributions of the ECEIs (meetings, planning, evaluations) and the Portuguese SMTs work more collaboratively with the educators; activities with SMTs are weekly, from 30 to 60 minutes, and are offered either in an integrated way, or optional in both countries; access to activities with SMTs, however, is not guaranteed equitably in any of the countries; SMTs are conceptualised mainly by their personal characteristics and their specific musical training; the participants reinforce the importance of music in the education of children from 0 to 5 years old and the deeper, specialized and integral performance of the SMTs, providing access to a variety of musical instruments, to activities with musical intentionality and objectives, and to a more solid, diversified and qualified musical experience; finally, the participants defend the need for the SMTs to have professional, musical and pedagogical training, specifically appropriate to this age group.por
