| dc.description.abstract | The developmental psychopathology conceptual model argues that infant’s normative development results from the adequate accomplishment of the developmental tasks. Different parental and infant’s variables may interfere with the adequate accomplishment of the sleep developmental tasks, putting the infant at risk for sleep problems. Mother’s depression symptoms were associated with infant’s sleep problems in separate studies. Different findings were reported on the direction of this association and the potential bidirectional influences were only recently explored. Infant’s sex and temperament were shown to play a major role on the association between mother’s depression symptoms and infant’s sleep problems. This thesis aimed to explore the effects between mother’s prenatal and postpartum depression symptoms and infant’s sleep problems during the first six months of infant’s life. The specific objectives comprised: (1) to analyze the effects of mother’s prenatal and postpartum depression symptoms on infant’s sleep problems during the first six months of life; (2) to explore the unidirectional and bidirectional links between mother’s depression symptoms and infant’s sleep problems; (3) to analyze the moderator role of infant’s sex on the unidirectional and bidirectional links between mother’s depression symptoms and infant’s sleep problems; and (4) to analyze the mediator effect of infant’s temperament at two weeks on the effects of mother’s prenatal depression symptoms on infant’s sleep problems specifically in boys. This thesis was comprised by six papers. Findings revealed (1) mother’s prenatal and early postpartum depression symptoms have a negative effect on infant’s sleep problems; (2) both unidirectional and bidirectional effects between mother’s depression symptoms and infant’s sleep problems; (3) the moderator role of infant’s sex on the effects between mother’s depression symptoms and infant’s sleep problems; and (4) infant’s negative affectivity at two weeks mediates the effects of mother’s prenatal depression symptoms on infant’s sleep problems at six months in boys. Mother’s prenatal depression symptoms have a major effect on infant’s sleep problems, but mutual influences also occur during postpartum. Boys are more vulnerable to the effects of mother’s depression symptoms and mothers are more vulnerable to the effects of their boys’ sleep problems. This differential impact may be explained by the effects of mother’s prenatal depression symptoms on boys’ negative affectivity, which leads to more sleep problems. | por |
