The GRF research program is aimed at carrying out basic and applied research and gaining fundamental knowledge for the synthesis of thin coatings from the vapour phase in vacuum (PVD processes) that can enable the development of new material concepts, design of multilayers at a nanosized level and optimisation of the coating system performance for a specific scientific or industrial application. Emphasis is placed on those aspects of materials science that are concerned with the relationships between deposition, structure/composition, properties, and modelling of thin functional nanostructured coatings.
