dc.description.abstract | Threshold concepts are reported in the literature as complex concepts that students have difficulty in understanding, sometimes taking refuge in the memorisation of the concept without really understanding it. This study reports the creative video editing as a pedagogical strategy to understanding threshold concepts, namely the reflexive action of the student on the understanding of threshold concepts worked and reflect on how the sharing of the explanatory video can contribute to the understanding of the threshold concept. The study is bounded in the VideoM@t project and supported in the JuxtaLearn learning process. In the first phase, we involved ten students from the 6th grade, twenty-three students from the 9th year of schooling and their mathematics teachers in the creative video edition following the JuxtaLearn learning methodology. In the second phase, we oriented a training action to a group of six math teachers, and we promoted together with 52 students the creative edition of videos. We sought to answer the following research question: how can creative editing and video sharing be a pedagogical strategy for understanding the threshold concept? Given the nature of the study, development research methodology was adopted. The data was collected through (i) direct observation, (ii) indirect observation, through video recording, (iii) think-aloud techniques, (iv) software logging, (v) walk-through, (vi) Focus group interviews, and (vii) questionnaires. The threshold concept identification and unfolding them into smaller stumbling blocks proved to be an essential aid for teachers to be able to help students overcome their understanding gaps in structuring concepts in mathematics. The results indicate that the creative edition of explanatory video by the students constitutes an appealing methodology that allows improving the deep understanding of concepts of the area of mathematics where the students present difficulty. The creative video editing promoted in students the development of skills such as analysis, synthesis and evaluation, as well as a deeper knowledge of the studied concepts. | por |
