O Antropoceno – um naufrágio com espectador?

Abstract

O filósofo alemão Hans Blumenberg publicou, em 1979, uma análise detalhada sobre a “metáfora existencial” (“Daseinsmetapher”) do naufrágio com espectador. Esta análise enquadra-se, na vasta obra de Blumenberg, por um lado, num conjunto de estudos que incidem sobre metáforas paradigmáticas que marcaram fortemente o rumo dos pensamentos humanos. Por outro lado, encontram o seu fundamento teórico nas reflexões metaforológicas do autor. Três pressupostos blumenberguianos parecem-me, neste âmbito, importantes: (i) as metáforas fortes permitem que haja, ao longo da história do pensamento humano, variações surpreendentes e, frequentemente, imprevisíveis, sobre a sua primeira versão; (ii) estudar sob uma perspetiva histórica e simultaneamente topológica o desenvolvimento destas variações pode-nos esclarecer não apenas sobre o potencial já realizado, mas também sobre o potencial ainda não realizado destas metáforas; (iii) as metáforas exprimem uma forma peculiar de ‘trabalhar’ uma determinada problemática que não é entendível, racionalmente, em toda a sua extensão e profundidade. A análise blumenberguiana da metáfora do naufrágio com espectador vai da Antiguidade até a meados do século XX. O que se pretende apresentar nesta comunicação é, para além de uma breve síntese do estudo de Blumenberg, uma reflexão acerca de novas variações sobre esta metáfora que surgiram no século XXI no âmbito do debate sobre o Antropoceno, portanto num tempo que Blumenberg, falecido em 1996, já não vivenciava.

The German philosopher Hans Blumenberg published in 1979 a detailed analysis of the “existential metaphor” (“Daseinsmetapher”) shipwreck with spectator. This analysis fits, in the vast work of Blumenberg, on the one hand, in a series of studies that focus on paradigmatic metaphors that strongly marked the direction of human thoughts. On the other hand, they find their theoretical basis in the metaphorological reflections of the author. Three Blumenbergian assumptions seem to me to be important: (i) strong metaphors allow surprising and often unpredictable variations on the first version throughout the history of human thought; (ii) to study from a historical and topological perspective the development of these variations can clarify not only the potential already realized but also the unrealized potential of these metaphors; (iii) metaphors express a peculiar way of ‘working’ a particular problematic that is not rationally understandable in all its extent and depth. The Blumenbergian analysis of the metaphor of the shipwreck with spectator goes from antiquity to the mid-twentieth century. In this paper I will focus, after a brief synthesis of Blumenberg’s essay, on new variations on this metaphor that emerged in the 21st century in the context of the debate on the Anthropocene, so in a time that Blumenberg, deceased in 1996, no longer lived.
