The ability to identify words in the continuous chain of speech is one of the first tasks we face when learning a language. It is believed that processes associated with the extraction of statistical regularities present in this input, in particular the probability of one segment following another, are fundamental to word identification. However, evidence on how this identification is affected by the transactional probabilities (TP) of the input’s stimuli and the conditions under which these are presented is scarce. In this study, we used the statistical learning (SL) paradigm presented under implicit and explicit learning conditions to test behavioral and neural differences in the discrimination of “words” vs. distractors in a two alternative forced choice task (2-AFC). In this task, eight “words”, four with high TP (1.0) and the remainder with low TP (.50), were presented in the familiarization phase of each task and exhaustively paired with eight distractors (PT = 0). The behavioral and electrophysiological data showed that, although there was behavioral evidence of statistical learning for the two types of "words" in the two learning conditions, effects of the type of “words” and the conditions in which they were presented were only shown in the electrophysiological data. |
