ingressantes no ES.
variáveis pessoais e sociofamiliares, expectativas e dificuldades antecipadas (na semana de entrada);
acadêmico, incluindo aspectos de rendimento, permanência e aprovação (término do 1º semestre);
variáveis associadas a envolvimento acadêmico e institucional (entre 7º e 8º mês); e, novamente
sucesso acadêmico (término do 2º semestre).
artigos, incluindo capítulos de: introdução, referencial teórico, apresentação do percurso metodológico,
e conclusão do estudo.
“Transição, adaptação e sucesso acadêmico na educação superior: uma análise através da regressão”;
e, 5- “Prevendo a permanência de estudantes no ensino superior: confluência de variáveis pessoais e
contextuais”.
Compreender as variáveis
The first year of Higher Education (HE) considered to be critical period to deal with the demands and challenges of the university context. Such an environment can facilitate or limit positive adaptive experiences and, consequently, the trajectory of academic success in students entering higher education. With that in mind, we understand the variables that influence the academic trajectory process of students in the first year of HE at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Paraíba (IFPB), observing aspects of transition, adaptation, and success from different validated instruments and from theories that are compatible with reality and institutional context. The study had a longitudinal character and a mixed methodology, which investigated 715 first year students of the IFPB, from 10 campuses and 26 higher education courses in the on-site and distance modalities, throughout 2019 at 5 different times, taking into account the school background variables, personal and socio family variables, expectations and anticipated difficulties (in the entry week); variables related to social support and adaptation experiences (between the 2nd and 3rd month); academic success, including aspects of performance, permanence and approval (end of the 1st semester); variables associated with academic and institutional involvement (between 7th and 8th month); and, again, academic success (end of the 2nd semester). The thesis was presented as a compilation of 5 articles, including chapters on: introduction, theoretical framework, presentation of the methodological path, and conclusion of the study. The articles that integrated the thesis were: 1- “Psychometric properties of instruments from the academic trajectory at the university”; 2- “Personal and contextual variables that differentiate the academic expectations of students entering higher education”; 3- “Indicators of academic success in higher education: analysis according to the nature of the courses”; 4- “Transition, adaptation and academic success in higher education: an analysis through regression”; and, 5- “Foreseeing the permanence of students in higher education: confluence of personal and contextual variables”. The results point to the complexity of the phenomena that permeate academic trajectories during HE, which are determined by a confluence of transition, adaptation, and student success variables, especially first year students. Understanding the impacting variables in the different trajectories is essential for carrying out institutional actions that contribute to guaranteeing academic permanence in higher education, as well as to the success of students in the face of the challenges imposed by the university context. |
