Within the scope of this research project, the aim is to investigate the impact of reactivating a section of railway line, namely the Tâmega railway line, in an area that continued to develop after being deactivated. Initially the Tâmega railway line was part of an ambitious project that intended to establish a connection to Porto’s metropolitan area via the Guimarães railway line and to Spain via Corgo railway line, however, this was never realised. In recent years, following its deactivation and controversies surrounding this issue, there have been discussions regarding the reactivation of the segment under study. This resulted in the possibility of a narrative being created which explores what could have been, what was, what it currently is and what it may become in the future. In addition, to its historical framework, an analysis of its morphology utilising different approaches, methods and perspectives, starting with the former Tâmega railway line’s territorial surrounding and later in comparison with its margins. The city did not remain stagnant and numerous obstacles to the reactivation of the Tâmega Railway line arose. This resulted in an intent to identify and subsequently resolve these. In addition to the premise of reactivating the old railway line, importance has also been given to its margins, exploring and understanding both its problems and strengths. Utilising these objectives resulted in the formulation of an intervention strategy that aims to intervene in different fields with the goal of creating a natural connection between the railway line and its margins. It is in this context that an intervention proposal has been developed, focusing on the reactivation of the Tâmega railway line and its banks, consisting on the execution of actions on different fronts such as the implementation of a smooth path and also the resolution of the interstitial spaces present on the banks. With these three interventions it is possible to present a mobility infrastructure that combines public, private transport and soft modes, with the aim of facilitating and serving the community in their daily journeys between Amarante-Livração-Porto. |
