O saxofone: Origens, difusão e implementação em Portugal

Abstract

O percurso histórico do saxofone afigura-se pouco comum, sobretudo no que respeita à sua invenção mais recente, quando comparado com outros instrumentos musicais. Inventado, nas suas diversas tipologias, entre 1830 e o início da década de 40 do século XIX, teve no seu inventor, Adolphe Sax (1814 – 1894) o seu mais importante promotor. Neste artigo descreve-se de que forma o saxofone foi ganhando popularidade entre os músicos da época e em que contextos musicais foi sendo introduzido, na Europa e nos Estados Unidos da América. A chegada do instrumento a Portugal deu-se pouco depois, na década de 1850, pelas mãos de Augusto Neuparth, um virtuoso músico português de ascendência alemã e radicado em Lisboa. De que forma se consolidou o instrumento em Portugal, e quem foram os principais agentes responsáveis pela sua introdução no país? Através de uma recolha bibliográfica e de entrevistas a saxofonistas portugueses, pretende se, neste artigo, ilustrar o percurso do saxofone: primeiros músicos, inclusão do instrumento no sistema educativo, atividades musicais e concertísticas desenvolvidas desde a sua introdução em Portugal até aos dias de hoje. Como objetivo último visa-se compreender em que medida é que a história do saxofone, do seu repertório, e do sistema educativo português influenciou o desenvolvimento das pedagogias concretas do instrumento de forma a projetarem-se na configuração que atualmente é oferecida às crianças em contexto escolar na Escola Básica.

The historical course of the saxophone seems unusual, especially in regard to its most recent invention when compared to other musical instruments. Invented in its various typologies between 1830 and the beginning of the 1940s, the inventor Adolphe Sax (1814 - 1894) was the most important promoter of the instrument. This article describes how the saxophone was gaining popularity among musicians of the time and in which musical contexts it was being introduced, in Europe and the United States of America. The instrument arrived in Portugal shortly afterwards, in the 1850s, by the hands of Augusto Neuparth, a virtuoso Portuguese musician of German descent and settled in Lisbon. How was the instrument consolidated in Portugal, and who were the main agents responsible for its introduction in the country? Through a bibliographical collection and interviews with Portuguese saxophone players, this article intends to illustrate the saxophone's journey: first musicians, inclusion of the instrument in the educational system, musical and concert activities developed since its introduction in Portugal until today. The ultimate goal is to understand the extent to which the history of the saxophone, its repertoire, and the Portuguese educational system influenced the development of the instrument's specific pedagogies in order to project themselves in the configuration that is currently offered to children in school context in Basic School (9 – 15 years olds).
