Parafernália: um estudo etnográfico num bairro de habitação social

Abstract

Este estudo investiga os desafios enfrentados por quem reside num bairro social, tendo como “centro” etnográfico o bairro de Parafernália. A pesquisa foi motivada pela necessidade de compreender as dificuldades e carências do quotidiano dos parafernalenses, procurando conhecer para contribuir para o combate à estigmatização de territórios periféricos. O objetivo principal foi compreender de que forma é que as representações sociais associadas a Parafernália influenciam o quotidiano dos seus habitantes. A metodologia adotada é uma mistura dos dois ramos de abordagem, quantitativa e qualitativa. Para o uso da abordagem quantitativa aplicaram-se questionários e para o uso da qualitativa aplicaram-se entrevistas semiestruturadas a habitantes. Para além disto, realizou-se uma etnografia e análise documental relativa à história de Parafernália. Os resultados revelaram que os principais desafios enfrentados pelos residentes incluem a falta de infraestruturas adequadas, precariedade no acesso aos serviços em geral devido à escassez de horários dos transportes públicos, assim como limitadas oportunidades de emprego. Os moradores também relataram sentir-se estigmatizados devido ao preconceito associado ao bairro social e à etnia predominante, o que impacta negativamente a sua autoestima. Conclui-se que é essencial ajustar as políticas de inclusão e a existência de programas de desenvolvimento comunitário para mitigar estes desafios. Recomenda-se a implementação de iniciativas que promovam a inclusão social, a melhoria da infraestrutura e o fortalecimento das redes de apoio comunitário, bem como um maior investimento em educação e capacitação profissional.

This study investigates the challenges faced by those living in a social housing neighborhood, with the Parafernália neighborhood as its ethnographic “center”. The research was motivated by the need to understand the difficulties and needs of the daily lives of Parafernalenses, seeking to learn more to contribute to combating the stigmatization of peripheral territories. The main objective was to understand how the social representations associated with Parafernália influence the daily lives of its inhabitants. The methodology adopted is a mixture of two approaches, quantitative and qualitative. To use the quantitative approach, questionnaires were applied and to use the qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were applied to inhabitants. In addition, an ethnography and documentary analysis of the history of Parafernália were carried out. The results revealed that the main challenges faced by residents include the lack of adequate infrastructure, poor access to services in general due to limited public transport schedules, and limited employment opportunities. Residents also reported feeling stigmatized due to the prejudice associated with the social housing neighborhood and the predominant ethnicity, which negatively impacts their self-esteem. It is concluded that it is essential to adjust inclusion policies and the existence of community development programs to mitigate these challenges. It is recommended that initiatives be implemented that promote social inclusion, improve infrastructure and strengthen community support networks, as well as greater investment in education and professional training.
