The COVID-19 spread like a storm that affected the entire globe at the end of 2019. In the face of the epidemic, countries adopted different emergency measures, based on their own political, cultural, medical contexts and other national characteristics. This research aims to identify and analyze the factors underlying measures to combat the epidemic in China and Portugal, from a cultural perspective. For example, at the beginning of the pandemic, China's communist government immediately imposed a mandatory and strict confinement, while Portugal implemented a relatively more flexible confinement. To better understand such radically different national strategies between East and West, a more in-depth investigation into what cultural differences acted in this context is required. This dissertation analyzes the evolution of the epidemic, using relevant research materials to reflect on the cultural factors underlying the different measures to combat COVID-19 in China and Portugal. The first chapter focuses on the evolution of the epidemic and its impact on global politics, economy, culture and education. The measures taken by the Chinese and Portuguese governments to combat the epidemic and the results obtained are subsequently identified. Finally, we highlight the reasons why the two governments took such measures, what popular reactions they aroused, from a cultural perspective, and what lessons could be useful in the future, if similar outbreaks occur.por
por
