This dissertation, developed within the Master’s degree in Cultural Heritage at the University of Minho, aims to analyse the transformations of female beauty standards in Portugal between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, using the periodical press as its main source, particularly the magazine Ilustração Portuguesa, published between 1834 and 1933. Drawing on the concept of written heritage, this study seeks to understand how the illustrated press contributed to the construction, dissemination and normalisation of models of femininity, beauty and female behaviour within a context of profound social, cultural and political transformations. Through the analysis of articles, images, advertisements and discourses published in the magazine, the research focuses on different dimensions of female beauty, namely clothing, the body, hygiene, aesthetics, morality and education. The study highlights how female appearance functioned as a social code through which values of respectability, social distinction and elite belonging were inscribed, as well as tensions between tradition and modernity. The relationships between beauty, consumption and science are also explored, with particular attention given to the role of medicine, aesthetics and the cosmetics industry in legitimising practices of control, correction and improvement of the female body. The dissertation demonstrates that Ilustração Portuguesa should be understood not merely as a reflection of its time, but as an active agent in the production of normative discourses on beauty and femininity. It concludes that the periodical press constitutes a fundamental source for the study of female beauty standards, establishing itself as a form of written heritage of high historical and cultural value for understanding the social and symbolic dynamics associated with the construction of femininity at the turn of the century.eng
