Most of the existing evidence points to the existence of retinopetal (or efferent) fibers in the optic nerve and retina in primates and humans. Although their number may not be large, their branches cover extensive retinal areas, which indicates the possibility of exerting significant influences on the retinal function. We aimed to detect whether the electroretinogram is sensitive or not to the activity of the retinopetal fibers in the retina. The pattern ERG (PERG), the ON-OFF ERG and photopic negative response (PhNR) was evaluated in 15 young adult subjects (25.6 ± 5.18years), with objective refraction (M= -1.28±1.77D). With binocular ERG stimulation, the monocular ERG response of the contralateral eye was measured in three conditions: no occlusion (baseline), total monocular occlusion and partial occlusion of the contralateral. For PERG, in the contralateral eye there was an increase in the implicit time in N35 and P50 components with the total monocular occlusion and partial occlusion when compared to the baseline value (p≤0.023 for all conditions). There was a significant decrease in the amplitude value, N35-P50 and P50-N95 (p<.001). For ON-OFF ERG, there is a significant difference in the b-wave, with a slight increase in the implicit time in the eye with monocular occlusion compared to the other two conditions (p<.001). When we compare the monocular contralateral occlusion condition with the other conditions, there is a marked decrease in amplitude in all waves (p<.001). For PhNR, a significant difference was found in the b-wave and PT-wave, with a slight decrease in amplitude in the eye with monocular occlusion compared to the other two conditions (p≤0.041). The electroretinogram may be sensitive to detect the activity of the efferent fibers in the different cellular structures of the retina. Although the wave does not have exactly the same characteristics, it has similarities with the wave components of the uncovered eye that also appear in the contralateral occluded eye. This may suggest an eye-brain- contralateral eye response. Despite the limitations, further investigations are needed to confirm the existence of some fibers in the optic nerve conduct top–down information (from the brain to the eye), which can influence the bioelectrical activity of the retina.por
