Positioning mathematics as a tool available to students so that, with it, they are able, as future citizens, to understand and act on social inequalities and, at the same time, connect it to reality in order to strengthen their understanding is a double challenge for mathematics education. In this sense, exploring modelling tasks in the classroom, whose contexts focus on social phenomena, means contributing to a fair school that no longer perpetuates the subject of mathematics as a determining factor in school failure and exclusion. This study aims to investigate the contribution of mathematical modelling and social justice in the learning of functions by middle school students. In order to achieve this goal, the following specific objectives was sought: the framing of students' expectations for learning functions through modelling tasks on social phenomena, in relation to the school culture; the identifying of students' activities in solving modelling tasks, with a focus on social justice, in learning functions; and the verifying of how students value modelling tasks contextualized by situations of social justice in learning functions. Axiological principles of justice, critical pedagogy, mathematical education for social justice and mathematical modelling constitute the domains for the theoretical basis of this study. Given the nature of the general aim of the study, a qualitative and interpretative methodology was adopted, with a case study design, relating to two classes, one in year 8 and another in year 9, from different public schools in the southern region of the country. In order to meet the specific objectives, in addition to students, headmasters, teachers of the maths department, the maths teachers of both classes took part in this research. Data collection involved observed lessons, interviews at different times during the empirical component, audio and video recordings of the lessons observed, the students' productions, as well as all the relevant documents that are part of the school, as well as the researcher's field notes. The data collected was subjected to content analysis. The results show that, for students, the main motivational impetus for attending school is social, while the degree of interest in school experiences is determined by the relational aspect. While one group of students’ hopes for a promising future is achieved through meritocracy, the other group values the present time, recognising in physical and human resources the benefits of the school they attend. Across the board, the students select the exercise-problem pair as well as the tasks associated with learning mathematics, positioning it, in particular, with the topic of functions, disconnected from reality. These students value the subject for the impact it will have on their futures and accept the failure it enfolds, based on the status quo of a mathematics education that both selects and stratifies. With reference to the students' activities in solving modelling tasks, with a focus on social justice, the students carry out these tasks in a holistic and atomistic way. Understanding and simplifying the task are implicit activities that the students carried out in groups, with varying degrees of autonomy depending on the difficulties raised. Defining the model is an explicit modelling activity, which reveals some obstacles that are minimised with the intervention of the respective teachers. The activity of working with the model proved to be the closest to the way the students usually work. In the activity of interpreting the results, there were different manifestations of reflective knowledge. Validating the model was an activity that proved to be a barrier for many students. Other activities in which the students engaged in were critical reading of data, working in groups, developing autonomy and establishing verbal discussions. The main contributions that the students highlight in solving the modelling tasks on social phenomena are the visibility of the application of function content to reality, the space given to promoting autonomy and the dialogical action in which they were involved. This outcome was influenced, in a symbiotic way by the development of socio-political awareness and the mobilisation of the students' socio-cultural experiences. As a result of crossing functions with reality and verbal interactions, narratives show a reconfiguration of students' perception on the utility of functions.por
