This empirical study fits in the line of research on historic cognition, and aims at analysing the adequacy of digital technologies, namely Google maps and Geocaching, in the process of teaching and learning the disciplines of Environmental Study and Portuguese History and Geography. This project was developed in a classroom context in two schools of the urban centre of Braga – a 2nd-year class of 19 students, and a 6th-year class of 23 students – and the reason for choosing this topic of research was the poor connection of the students with activities related to the use of the new technologies in an educational context and the rapid growth of this type of equipment and digital tools in the current society, in which it appears this new generation known as "digital natives". Therefore, we have formulated the following research questions: “What are the potentialities of the use of the new technologies in the process of teaching and learning History?”; “What kind of historic knowledge and skills are strengthened through the use of Geocaching as a teaching strategy?”; “How do students evaluate their acquired knowledge through the use of this strategy, with the help of the new technologies, mainly Google maps and Geocaching?”. Our main goals were: 1) to point out the potentialities of the new technologies in the process of teaching and learning History; 2) to broaden the students horizons; 3) to develop both digital and research methodologies; 4) to build and consolidate the students’ historic knowledge of their local environment and of the Portuguese History through the use of Geocaching; 5) to evaluate the adequacy of digital strategies to Primary Teaching and its application to the teaching and learning of History. We have used strategies involving both individual and team work, namely filling in a diagnostic questionnaire, defining itineraries and locating several places through the use of Google maps, creating geocaches, searching geocaching in the vicinity of the school, mapping out Geocaching routes and filling in a metacognition sheet. This study allowed us to conclude that the use of Google maps and Geocaching, besides being an adventure and a discovery, are activities that enable students to have a better understanding of their environment and a better assimilation of the theoretical subjects through the use of technology. These are pedagogical activities with an added value for the educational context, for they foster the development of significant learning in the area of historic thinking and awareness, promoting at the same time digital literacy among students.por
