All over the world, if one looks at built structures, most of them were made using concrete. In most cases, concrete is used with an embedded reinforcing material (e.g., steel) to improve its tensile strength, thus yielding to reinforced concrete (RC). The adoption of concrete dates to many centuries ago, but its current use has been a hindrance, as it emits the unwanted high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. Apart from this, aging, poor construction practices, need for changing the use of a structure, new regulations, among others, have led to questioning the sustainability and long-term performance of built RC structures. Rehabilitation in the form of “strengthening systems” can be a promising solution. This PhD thesis aimed at addressing the durability and long-term performance of RC structures strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites using non-prestressed Externally Bonded Reinforcement (EBR) and Near-Surface Mounted (NSM) techniques, and the EBR prestressed via mechanical and gradient anchorages. Multi-scale and multi-physics investigations on specimens exposed to laboratory-controlled (accelerated) and outdoor (natural) environments for up to 6 years were performed. These are key findings for up to 6 years of aging: (i) at material level: concrete and CFRP laminates generally resisted against degradation; however, water diffusion through epoxy adhesives substantially decreased their tensile strengths and elastic moduli by 60-66 and 70-75 %, respectively; numerical and analytical models for the adhesive water diffusion simulated accurately the experimental results; (ii) at bond level: EBR and NSM generally resisted against degradation; but the latter degraded its bond strength under freeze-thaw cycling and water exposure by nearly 9 and 12 %, respectively; furthermore, numerical models for the EBR followed the experimental results; (iii) at structural element level: experimental data show that higher CFRP axial stiffness and presence of prestressed systems decreased the instantaneous deflection significantly, while the latter increased more the time-dependent deflections due to creep and shrinkage effects but led to total deflections much smaller compared with non-prestressed systems; analytical models for short-term flexural analysis showed an excellent agreement with experimental tests, owing to newly proposed equations; different mid-span deflection analytical models predicted well the experimental results, and time-dependent factor curves were established to predict deflections up to 50 years. Finally, environmental conversion factors were proposed at material and bond levels, being equal to 0.26 and 0.75, respectively, for the harshest environments.eng
