| dc.description.abstract | The main goal of this project is the production of polymer-based electrodes for application in electroencephalography. Firstly, silver-added titanium nitride (TiNAg) thin films were deposited by DC reactive magnetron sputtering with Ag contents ranging from 0 to ~50 at.%. The sputtered films’ behaviour can be consistently divided into three clear zones, defined mainly by the amount of Ag incorporated. With increasing Ag concentration, the coatings evolve from a nitride/compound-like behaviour to a metallic-like one. Resistivity values suffer a strong decrease. In a second phase, co-deposited TiNAg thin films were subjected to a set of annealing treatments at different temperatures, aiming at studying the effects on their morphological and structural features and its influence on the electrical and mechanical properties. The increase of the annealing temperature revealed that significant morphological modifications were induced, mainly in the sample with a Ag content of 36.3 at. %, which revealed extensive Ag segregation to the surface. Resistivity and reduced modulus values suffer a steep decrease with an annealing treatment at 200 ºC, becoming almost constant afterwards. In the third stage of the project TiNAg sub-stoichiometric coatings were deposited in order to optimize the N/Ti ratio, to avoid the Ag segregation verified in the second part of the project. There were morphological and structural modifications in sub-stoichiometric coatings, particularly regarding the disaggregation of the TiN compact columnar structures and the phenomenon of Ag segregation, which were successfully avoided. Regarding the electrical resistivity and the elastic modulus, it was found that the substoichiometric samples had small modifications. After optimization of the TiNAg coating, the polymer deposition was also studied. In a first step, a Ti thin film was deposited onto a polymeric substrate with variations of the current applied to the target with the aim of analysing the combination of the coating adhesion to the substrate with the maintenance of the coating's electrical conduction capacity during a dynamic strain test. It was considered the coating with a current of 1.5A applied to the target as the one that possessed a more acceptable adhesion / properties relationship. In a second step, we tested the maximum strain from which the coating TiNAg optimized and deposited on a TPU substrate alters its electrical conduction ability. It was found that the increase of Ag content promotes the critical deformation. Finally, the TiNAg optimized coating was deposited on a TPU substrate in order to analyse the viability of the produced electrode for the envisaged application (acquisition of the EEG bioelectrical signal). It was found that the optimized coating deposited on the TPU substrate has a similar signal quality to that of the commercial electrode. | por |
