| eng |
| dc.description.abstract | This study of qualitative descriptive nature in the line of research on historical cognition and focussing on the use of narrative in the History clss, aimed to find out what types of narrative students build on a specific historical situation: the English Ultimatum of 1890. Within this research context, the concept of Narrative must be understood in a frame of structural realism, descriptive-explanatory, a tendency that increases not only the social explanations but also the behavioural ones, and that should be approached from a perspective of action and structure. In this research, about 100 students’ were involved in different phases of the project from the 2nd and 3rd Ciclos do Ensino Básico, from a school in the Northwest Coast of Portugal. These participants ages were between 10 and 16 and matched an average schooling progress according to the school records. Three consecutive exploratory studies preceded the gathering of data for the main study: A Questionnaire of Students’ Previous Knowledge on the Historical Issue to focus on and two Pilot Studies. The whole process ended with a set of semi-structured interviews. The instrument that allowed the gathering of data for the main study – the students’ kit contained a chronology, a map, a set of images, a historiographical narrative text of explanatory-descriptive type, a task for the students – build up a narrative on /about…- and finally asked for a comment on the accomplished task. The historical material (written and iconic) contained primary and secondary historical sources. The analysis process was guided by conceptual maps intertwined by four main constructs - Origin of Information – Narrative Structure - Logical Thought Sequence - Historical Concepts. The students’ written production was submitted to open codification which allowed its ordering in a progressive set of six patterns of sophistication that varied from the less structured/elaborated written units to the more structured/elaborated, designated by increasing order of: level 1 – Fragments, level 2 – Alternative Description, level 3- Simple Description, level 4 – Coherent Description, level 5 – Explanatory Description and level 6 – Contextualized Explanatory Description. It was also possible to obtain a set of information that allowed the reaching of different profiles of the level of understanding the students presented from the given historical situation. The same profiles have already been found in the studies of Barca (2000) and Gago (2001): Restricted Understanding (very restricted, restricted and still restricted), Descriptive Understanding and Explanatory Descriptive Understanding. Regarding the comments made by the students on the given tasks, these can be categorised into two large conceptual groups – Difficulties felt and Conscious Learning. Finally, a brief quantitative approach aimed to show the distribution of the Sample by levels of Sophistication, the distribution by Levels of Sophistication by Grade and Sex. As it was a learning situation whose focus showed the performance of pupils regarding their narrative (re)construction from a historical narrative in the context of History class, the results revealed that one can find different levels of narrative sophistication in History. Although most pupils justify the logic of their argumentation essentially on the given historiographical text, and few showed any crossing this information with other given sources, there were several examples that showed a noticeable presence of a logical thought sequence narrative structure, where it was possible to register one, although sometimes subtle, information from multivarious origin, some stereotyped prejudice as well as an acceptable grasp of historical concepts used. Regarding the conclusions to be taken in the interest of History teaching, the way how pupils dealt with the historiographical text in the classroom context, as if it were some kind of holy or mysterious thing, left some uncertainty about the teaching methodology that is still prevailing in our classrooms and that ought to be changed. | eng |
